My computer seems hot, but it still crashes even while running HD Fan control to keep it cool.

I read somewhere that running Trim Enabler for the SSD drive would fix the problem, but it doesn't seem to do anything.Īny ideas would be really appreciated.

I have the app set up so that it stats automatically at the start up, with an icon on the upper bar (near bluetooth and time icons). Additionally, these days I manually display a window showing the temperature of the different chips my idea is that if the computer freezes, I'll be able to see all the temperatures and extract some useful information before rebooting. Since I wrote my last post, my computer froze just once. Somehow I thought that I had to control the "GPU Heatsink", but it wasn't hotter at that moment than other times when the computer was working well.

Therefore, I changed the settings in one of the fans so that it would activate based on a different chip it's now taking care that the "MCP Heatsink" does not get too hot since this is the one that usually gets hottest (more than 60 degrees Celsius, which now are hardly surpassed). Apple has updated OS X El Capitan with a method that allows users to enable TRIM support for third party SSDs, reports MacRumors. To be able to enable TRIM on non-Apple SSD volumes with the trimforce command, the Mac will need a third party SSD, and to be running either OS X El Capitan 10.11.x or OS X Yosemite 10.10.4 or later versions, the command does not exist in prior releases of OS X (though earlier versions of OS X can use the third party TRIM Enabler utility ). At the moment, the only drawback of having Macs Fan Control installed and working is a little noise of the fans after one hour since I switch the iMac on. TRIM support allows an operating system to inform a solid-state. Fortunately Apple later provided a way to enable TRIM starting in OS X 10.10.5, and that restoration of TRIM support is still present in 10.11 El Capitan. In fact, I'd prefer the second solution provided in the blog post I mentioned, assuming it's not dangerous letting the chips to get as hot as they get. Of course, your mileage may vary, and MacTrast is NOT liable for any damage or data loss that may occur on your Mac.For the details, see Trim Enabler and Yosemite by Cindori Software, creator of the Trim Enabler utility.

We can say that we enabled TRIM on our early-2011 MacBook Pro with a Seagate ST480HM000 SSD that we purchased in December 2013, and it seems to be working perfectly. If you have a relatively recent SSD, though, there shouldn’t be any problem enabling TRIM via trimforce."

They note that the scary warnings about trimforce are likely in place “because not every disk implements TRIM in the same way, and older SSDs might behave oddly or in ways that OS X doesn’t expect when told to TRIM pages. As mentioned in the Ars Technica article, entering the command does prompt a “scary” message to be displayed. Third-party apps were previously required to enable TRIM for third-party SSD’s.Īs seen in the above screenshot, a user simply enters: “sudo trimforce enable” into the Terminal window to enable TRIM. Until now, TRIM in OS X was limited to Apple’s own OEM SSD’s. If TRIM is not enabled, users can experience significantly slower drive write speeds as the hard drive begins to fill up. TRIM is a system-level command that allows the drive and operating system to track which areas of a hard drive are marked as unused, and can therefore by erased and written to. Called trimforce, the utility can be executed from the OS X terminal, and it requires a reboot to start working.

With today’s OS X 10.10.4 update, however, Apple has added a command line utility that can be used to enable TRIM on third-party SSDs without having to download and install anything. However, it looks like Apple jumped the gun a bit, and included it in OS X 10.10.4. The third-party SSD support was widely expected to arrive in OS X El Capitan, Apple’s upcoming new version of OS X. Ars Technica reports that one of those enhancements is TRIM support for third-party SSD hard drives. Apple released OS X 10.10.4 on Tuesday, which was a mostly under-the-hood mix of bug fixes and performance enhancements.
